Speech & Language Milestones
What to look for...
Communication is rapidly developing even before your child’s first words are spoken and before your child can easily express his/her wants and needs.
Several speech, language, and hearing milestones occur from birth to five years of age. It is important to be aware of these milestones as they can alert you to the presence of a possible speech or language deficit.
Hearing loss should be ruled out when there is concern of a speech or language delay. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association provides a communication milestone chart, which you can access by clicking here.
If you have concerns regarding a speech or language delay, you should have your child’s hearing tested by one of the audiologists at Coastal Hearing and Balance Center, and have your child’s speech-language skills evaluated by a speech-language pathologist.
