Understanding seasonal allergies

Seasonal allergies are caused by allergens often present in the air during certain months of the year. For most, the two seasons that can result in the worst allergies include the spring and the fall. It often includes mold spores and pollen from outdoor plants that can be impossible for patients to avoid. When allergic rhinitis, or “hay fever,” occurs, patients will experience:

  • Nasal discharge
  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Constant sneezing
  • Head congestion
  • Increased asthmatic episodes

Seasonal allergies can have a huge impact on one’s day-to-day life. Fortunately, these environmental allergies can be tested and treated to provide patients with the relief they need to function at their best every day!

How are seasonal allergies tested?

Our practice utilizes the highest quality standards of seasonal allergy testing available in the area. With Modified Quantitative Testing, or MQT, our doctors are able to provide patients with a skin test that tests what main allergens a patient has a sensitivity to. Once this is done, our team then performs an Intradermal Dilution Testing, or IDT, to place a small amount of diluted allergens underneath the skin to provide specific testing results with accuracy. This information is then used to formulate the most effective treatment option.

What treatments are available for patients with seasonal allergies?

Immunotherapy is the most effective approach to seasonal allergies. Two types available include allergy injections and sublingual immunotherapy. Additionally, patients may want to avoid exposure to their specific allergies (if possible) and can use pharmacotherapy to control the allergy symptoms, including decongestants, prescription nasal sprays, and antihistamines.
