Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

The eustachian tube is tube that connects the nose to the ear. It functions to equalize pressure from the ear to the nose and also to drain fluid from the ear. At times, it doesn’t function properly, which results in symptoms in the ear.  Symptoms eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD include pressure, pain, and a clogged or muffled sensations in the ear. The eustachian tubes open and close when you chew, swallow, or yawn.

Symptoms of Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

• Fullness of the ear
• Ear Pain
• Muffled hearing
• Clicking or popping

Complications From Untreated Etd:

• Recurrent ear infections
• Damage to the middle ear
• Damage to the eardrum
• Cholesteatoma
• Hearing impairment

Eustachian Tuboplasty:

Tuboplasty is a procedure designed to correct a malfunctioning eustachian tube. Tuboplasty involves placing a balloon inside the malfunctioning eustachian tube, which opens and expands the tube, allowing for improved function over time. Tuboplasty is commonly performed in the operating room under anesthesia.
