How cochlear implants can help you hear
01/30/2021
Patients who have loss or impact of their inner ear hearing have a few options to consider when it comes to hearing aids. One of the more popular options is that of the cochlear implant. This is a device that is surgically placed into the ear area and redirects sound around the inner ear that is no longer functioning.
How does the Cochlear implant work?
A cochlear implant is designed in a way to mimic the method of natural hearing and function of the inner ear, or “cochlea,” which is how it derived the name. These implants have two parts, including the external sound processor and an implant that is placed during surgery underneath the skin. It is attached to device that is placed inside of the inner ear. The purpose of these parts is to bypass the inner ear area that isn’t working and send sound directly to the hearing nerves.
Who is a good candidate for cochlear implants?
The best candidates for cochlear implants are patients that meet the following criteria:
- Children or adults, regardless of age
- Patients with inner ear hearing loss
- Patients who do not find effective results with other types of hearing aids
- Patients considering a more robust system to help them hear properly
What are the benefits of the cochlear implant?
Cochlear implants:
- Improve the sound and tone of one’s own voice
- Make it easier for patients to communicate with their friends, family, and coworkers
- Allow patients to enjoy a better quality of life
- Improve safety, as patients can hear sounds around them in unfamiliar environments
- Allow for improved hearing when traditional hearing aid methods no longer work
- Allow young children with progressive hearing loss to progress and meet their developmental milestones in close alignment with their peers
