Say Goodbye to allergy shots with SLIT!

Allergies can cause a range of unpleasant symptoms, from itchy eyes to a runny or itchy nose, post-nasal drip, and more. Doctors can help patients with treatments like in-office allergy shots and medications. These treatments — particularly allergy shots — aren’t always convenient and can require you to return to your doctor’s office weekly during treatment periods.

If you need a simpler, faster allergy treatment to help you control or eliminate your allergic reactions, you may want to consider sublingual immunotherapy treatment, known as SLIT. It’s an innovative and convenient way to treat allergies at home.

What Is Sublingual Immunotherapy?

SLIT is an allergy treatment in the form of drops administered under the tongue. The drops contain a controlled dose of your specific allergens. When held under the tongue, they interact with the immune system, helping to desensitize your body and build long-term tolerance. SLIT is commonly used to help patients who have an allergic reaction to pollen, dust mites, mold and pet dander.

Benefits of SLIT

SLIT drops are:

  • Convenient: Patients take SLIT every day from the convenience of their own home.
  • Effective: SLIT enables patients to build a tolerance for exposure to allergens.
  • Long-lasting: The tolerance built through SLIT can provide lasting relief that persists for years after the course of treatment is completed.
  • Safe: Unlike traditional allergy shots, sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) is designed for safety and ease. You take it at home as a simple drop or tablet, skipping the need for frequent injections. Most importantly, the risk of a serious reaction is much lower. For added safety, your first dose is always administered in our office.
  • And no more needles!

SLIT may not be the best choice for you if you have:

  • Severe or uncontrolled asthma.
  • A known sensitivity to the ingredients in the SLIT drops.
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis.

How Does SLIT Work?

SLIT starts with a visit with your doctor. After allergy testing, you will receive your first SLIT dose at the office. If you do not have a negative reaction, the doctor will provide you with instructions on how to use SLIT at home. You will typically start with a low dose, gradually increasing the dosage at home, taking drops daily.

The method will be to place a certain number of drops under the tongue, then waiting for 1-2 minutes before swallowing to allow for absorption.

The best way to decide if SLIT is right for you is through a comprehensive evaluation. Contact Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat to schedule a consultation and allergy testing. We can create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific allergen sensitivities and health profile.
