What are the benefits of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy?
11/01/2021

Cold temperatures in winter months often lead to runny noses and frequent coughing. Deciphering whether symptoms are related to the common cold or something more significant, such as strep throat or tonsillitis, often requires a trip to the doctor’s office. If symptoms are chronic or recurrent and medical therapy is not resolving the issue, your primary physician or pediatrician may refer you for a consult with an ENT specialist. The physicians at Coastal Surgery Center are highly trained and specialize in procedures called a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy which can effectively relieve recurring symptoms related to tonsillitis and strep throat.
The tonsils and adenoids are two types of lymphatic tissue found in the throat. Tonsils are the masses of tissue on the back of the throat. Adenoids are masses of tissue found behind the nasal cavity, above the roof of the mouth. There are several reasons a patient may benefit from having their tonsils and adenoids removed. Enlargement of the tonsils and adenoids may lead to obstruction or blockage of the back of the throat, which could cause difficulty with swallowing, sleeping, or even breathing. Recurrent infections requiring frequent use of antibiotics is another reason to consult with the ENT physicians of Coastal Surgery Center.
Every patient has different recovery time and symptoms post procedure. The most common complaints after a tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy include pain and discomfort during eating and swallowing. Patients are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, eat ice cream, popsicles and anything that can be tolerated to help during the immediate post-operative phase.
There are many long term benefits of having a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. The risks and benefits should be discussed with both your primary physician and surgeon so an informed decision can be made.
