Why Does My Throat Hurt in the Morning?

03/28/2022

Tonsils and Adenoids

The reason of a sore throat can be defined by the type of symptoms you have. This can range from an itchy sensation and painful swallowing to changes in your voice.

Throat pain in the morning can be a result of postnasal discharges and reflux from the stomach.

Why Does My Throat Hurt When I Swallow?

Below are other common causes of a sore throat including:

  • a possible infection (viral, bacterial, fungal)
  • dry air quality
  • upper respiratory tract infections
  • muscle tension/strain
  • mechanical trauma or injury

Can Allergies Cause Sore Throat?

You may also experience a sore throat if you are allergic to pollens, molds, animal dander or house dust.

Different forms of inflammation, including dry heat, dehydration, chronic stuffy nose, pollutants, car exhaust, chemical exposure or straining your voice, can also cause a sore throat.

Why Is My Throat Sore? Causes and Symptoms

Viral Infections

Viruses, including ones that cause colds and the flu, are the most common causes of a sore throat.

Viral infections that may cause a sore throat include:

  • measles
  • chicken pox
  • croup and mononucleosis (also known as mono)

A sore throat may be a viral if you have the following symptoms:

  • A cough
  • A runny nose
  • Hoarseness (changes in your voice)
  • Conjunctivitis (also known as pink eye)

Bacterial Infections

You likely do not have a sore throat from a bacterial infection, such as strep throat.

Strep throat is caused by Streptococcus bacteria and can also cause tonsillitis, pneumonia, sinusitis (sinus infections) and ear infections.

Common symptoms of strep throat include the following:

  • A sore throat that begins very quickly
  • Pain when swallowing
  • A fever
  • Red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or
  • Tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the front of the neck

A sore throat can also be a warning of pertussis, also known as whooping cough. This highly contagious respiratory disease can be especially dangerous, possibly fatal, for babies who are less than a year old.
