What Is Blepharoplasty?
Your eyes can make you look tired even when you aren't. Whether you have heavy upper eyelids that create a sleepy appearance or bags that won't disappear no matter how much rest you get, blepharoplasty (eyelid lift surgery) at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat can help create a more refreshed appearance by removing excess skin and other tissues. Different techniques allow our team to make subtle adjustments while preserving the shape, character, and expression that give you your unique look. Make your eyes your best feature by scheduling a blepharoplasty consultation with our skilled facial plastic surgeons in Neptune or Holmdel, NJ.
How Is Blepharoplasty Performed?
`Your initial consultation will focus on whatever bothers you most about your eyes, whether that includes the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Our team will look at the amount and position of skin and fat around your eyes, your natural eyelid shape, and how the eyelids relate to the rest of your face to decide which approach is right for you.
For upper blepharoplasty, your surgeon will make a carefully placed incision within the natural crease of the eyelid before removing excess skin and fat. Once the incision has healed, its position within the eyelid will help hide any scars. Lower blepharoplasty is performed with an incision either just beneath the eyelashes or inside the lower eyelid. From there, they'll remove or reposition any excess fat to the tear trough, creating a smoother transition between the lower eyelid and cheek.
What Are the Benefits of Blepharoplasty?
With less heaviness above the eyes and fewer shadows or bags below them, your eyes can become the focus again, leaving your face looking brighter, more rested, and refreshed. At Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat, blepharoplasty is customized to your facial features, providing benefits such as:
- Opening up eyes that appear heavy or hooded
- Reducing puffiness and bags beneath your eyes
- Creating a brighter, more rested appearance
- Smoothing the area between your lower eyelids and cheeks
- Allowing your natural eye shape to appear more clearly
- Improving vision obstructed by excess upper eyelid skin

Frequently Asked Questions about Blepharoplasty
How long does eyelid surgery take?
Blepharoplasty usually takes about 1 – 2 hours. The exact time depends on whether you are having your upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both treated, and which techniques are needed to create the changes you want. We will give you a clearer idea of how long your procedure should take once your surgical plan is established.
Can an eyelid lift improve my vision?
Excess upper eyelid skin can become heavy enough to hang over the eyes and limit your peripheral vision, especially in the upper and outer portions of your visual field. Removing that excess skin can open the area and make it easier to see. If your eyelid concerns are purely cosmetic, blepharoplasty can refresh your appearance without changing your eyesight.
Can I combine blepharoplasty with other procedures?
Blepharoplasty can be combined with procedures such as a brow lift, facelift, or other facial surgery when you want to address several areas at once. Brow lifts are the most common addition, as a low brow can contribute to that tired look around the eyes. Our team can help you decide on the best approach possible for your needs and goals.
How long will my blepharoplasty results last?
Surgery can't stop your eyes and face from continuing to age, but the excess skin and fat addressed during the procedure won't return once you have healed. Your appearance will continue to change naturally over time, which may be addressed with nonsurgical treatments like BOTOX® or dermal fillers.
Does insurance cover eyelid surgery?
Insurance may cover eyelid surgery if it's being performed to help correct vision problems, but most plans don't cover cosmetic treatments. Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat is committed to price transparency, and our team can help you understand your expected costs and insurance benefits before you decide how to proceed.
