Mohs Reconstruction in Neptune and Holmdel, NJ

Once skin cancer has been removed from the face with Mohs surgery, the next step for many patients is reconstructive surgery to repair the area left behind. At Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat, we work closely with cancer surgeons across Neptune and Holmdel, NJ to coordinate Mohs reconstruction surgery and help patients get closer to a sense of normalcy after skin cancer removal. Our facial plastic surgeon pays close attention to the location of the wound, the surrounding skin, facial contours, and any nearby structures to support normal movement and function while restoring the area as naturally as possible. If you have recently undergone Mohs surgery or are planning treatment, contact our surgeon in the Greater New Jersey Shore area to learn how Mohs reconstruction can help you move forward.

The approach used for your Mohs reconstructive surgery will depend on the full size, location, and depth of the treatment area, which we'll evaluate during your consultation. Some smaller areas can be repaired by carefully bringing the edges of the skin together and closing them with sutures. In other cases, we may need to take a skin graft from another part of the body to repair the site. Once the reconstruction is finished, your surgeon will suture the area closed and bandage it to support recovery.

Successful skin cancer removal is an important milestone, but the area left behind may still need careful repair. Mohs reconstruction at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat is designed to restore and support the treated area while giving thoughtful attention to both facial appearance and function, providing benefits such as:

  • Restoring natural facial contours after skin cancer removal
  • Protecting and supporting delicate facial structures
  • Preserving comfortable facial movement and function
  • Minimizing noticeable changes to your appearance
  • Improving the appearance of the treated area as it heals
  • Empowering you to reclaim your confidence

Dr Goldfarb and his nurse April were incredible with my stressful state of mind. I was sent to him by my Dermatologist surgeon, Dr Kruse who performed my Mohs Surgery 2 days ago who had to go deep in my nose to successfully get the Squamous Cell Carcinoma out which left a big hole. Dr Goldfarb and April took such good care of me to repair my nose with ease. I would without a doubt recommend this wonderful surgeon (and April) for his skill and amazing bedside manner! Thank you Dr G and April!

I had a MOHS procedure done to remove a basal cell on the bridge of my nose. Dr. Goldfarb met with me before the procedure to explain the variety of ways he could close the wound depending on its size/exact location. He answered every question I had and showed me photos of similar possible outcomes. The closure left me with stitches on the bridge of my nose and around the curve of my nostril. Three months later I can barely see the scar (completely invisible under makeup) and my nose looks like it used to. I’m very happy with my results and my experience with Dr. Goldfarb’s office. Besides the great aesthetic result everyone there was friendly and made a somewhat stressful experience as easy as it could be. Highly recommend!

When is reconstruction needed after Mohs surgery?

Not every area treated with Mohs surgery requires extensive reconstruction. Smaller areas may be closed relatively simply or allowed to heal on their own. Reconstructive surgery may be recommended for larger or deeper areas, highly visible parts of the face, or locations where skin cancer removal has affected the shape, support, or function of a facial structure. The best approach depends on what remains after the cancer has been removed.

How soon after Mohs surgery can I have reconstructive surgery?

Mohs reconstruction can often be performed soon after the cancer has been removed, sometimes on the same day or shortly afterward. The timing depends on the location and extent of the repair as well as how your care has been coordinated. Our team will work with your Mohs surgeon ahead of time so you know what to expect once the removal is complete. Because Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat provides the complete spectrum of care for head and neck cancer patients, our board-certified, fellowship-trained otolaryngologist and facial plastics surgeon closely collaborates on your end-to-end treatment plan.

How long does Mohs reconstruction surgery take?

The length of your procedure depends on the size, depth, and location of the area being repaired. A straightforward closure may take relatively little time, while a larger reconstruction involving nearby tissue or a skin graft can take longer. Once the treated area has been evaluated, your surgeon can give you a better idea of how much time your reconstruction might take.

What kind of anesthesia is used for Mohs reconstruction?

Some smaller repairs can be performed with local anesthesia to numb the area, sometimes along with sedation to keep you comfortable. More involved facial reconstruction may require general anesthesia. Our providers will recommend the option that makes sense for the location and extent of your repair and explain what you can expect before the procedure.

Will I have scars after Mohs reconstructive surgery?

Any surgical repair following Mohs surgery is likely to leave some degree of scarring, although scars generally become less noticeable over time. Our surgeons have extensive experience with facial reconstruction and make every effort to keep scarring as inconspicuous as possible.

Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat provides Mohs reconstruction with careful consideration for your appearance, facial structure, and everyday function, while coordinating your care with your Mohs surgeon.
