Functional Rhinoplasty in Neptune, Holmdel, and Manahawkin, NJ

The shape of your nose affects more than just your appearance. Functional rhinoplasty is a form of nose surgery that focuses on straightening, reshaping, and stabilizing the nasal airways so you can breathe more easily. At Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat, functional rhinoplasty is planned around each patient's specific anatomy. There is no single surgical technique that works for every type of nasal obstruction, which is why our surgeons tailor each procedure to where the restriction occurs and how much structural support is needed. Whether you're considering nose surgery for functional or cosmetic reasons, our team is here to help. Schedule your rhinoplasty consultation in Neptune, Holmdel, or Manahawkin, NJ to get started.

The specific approach used during your surgery will depend on your nose's structure and the issues that are being addressed. Before creating a plan, your surgeon at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat will assess your airways to learn more about the internal structures and identify any areas that need to be straightened or reinforced to prevent collapse.

Functional rhinoplasty is typically performed using general anesthesia. During the procedure, your surgeon will create more room for air to pass through the nose while strengthening the structures that keep those passages open. This may involve removing or reducing tissue that is taking up too much space, repositioning cartilage into better alignment, reinforcing weakened areas with cartilage grafts, or reshaping the nasal bones when necessary. Incisions may be placed inside the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or on the outside (open rhinoplasty), which will be planned and discussed during your consultation.

Simply being able to breathe comfortably is something many of us take for granted, but for people who live with breathing difficulties, it can feel like a constant struggle. Functional rhinoplasty at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat can be a significant first step toward restoring your quality of life, offering benefits such as:

  • Opening blocked nasal passages to allow for clearer airflow
  • Reducing your risk of chronic inflammation and sinus infections
  • Improving sleep quality and daily comfort
  • Minimizing the need for temporary solutions, such as nasal sprays or strips
  • Enhancing performance during physical activities by helping you breathe more freely

Dr. Silberman is the best! He’s done a major nasal surgery on one of my daughters and a tonsillectomy on another. My daughter that had the tonsillectomy threw up (she got motion sickness in the car about 6 days post op) and ruptured a blood vessel when a scab came off and was bleeding really bad and I called the office en route to the ER and Dr. Silberman was at the hospital before we were even registered. She ended up needing an operation to stop the bleeding and I don’t know what his schedule was like that day but he never left my daughter until she was stable. He is not only good at what he does but his bedside manner is wonderful!! Caring, kind, and just a great human being. I highly recommend him and his office.

I have been going to ear specialists since I was 5 years old ! That was 70 years ago ! Seventy years of so many doctors who have had to clean out the collection of ear wax and dead skin that builds up after several mastoid surgeries. It can be very painful. But since I have gone to Lydia Hawk, Physician Assistant at Coastal Ear Nose and Throat, I can honestly say she is the best ! Cleans out my ears with no pain whatsoever. She has a great personality, making each visit a calm, comfortable experience.

My mother is 81 and had a nosebleed so bad that it sent us to the hospital and eventually required admission and a blood transfusion! A PA from Coastal ENT came to the ER to pack her nose to help stop the bleeding. She was wonderful. She was gentle, kind and encouraging. Just what my mother needed.Three days later we went to the office and saw Dr. Bressler. First, the staff at the office were all so personable and kind. My mother was so scared to have that packing removed as she thought it would hurt and second, she thought it would bleed again.Dr. Bressler was so sweet, very encouraging and positive. She took her time and was as gentle as possible. Unfortunately the vessel was too far back to be cauterized but it didn’t bleed. Dr. Bressler took her time explaining why it couldn’t be cauterized, how to help prevent the vessel from bleeding again, what to do if it does and what to expect if it becomes a recurring problem. She answered every question with kindness and compassion and never made us feel rushed or unimportant. You can tell she truly loves her job and loves people.I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Bressler and Coastal ENT! My oldest son may need an ENT soon. If so, I’m going to bring him to Dr. Bressler!

What is the difference between cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty?

The main difference is the reason for surgery. Cosmetic rhinoplasty is performed to change features of the nose that someone would like to look different, such as its size, profile, or tip. Functional rhinoplasty is performed to improve breathing by correcting structural problems that narrow or weaken the nasal airway. In some cases, functional rhinoplasty can also affect how the nose looks, but appearance is not the primary reason for the procedure.

What’s the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty?

During open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made between the nostrils, along with incisions inside the nose. A closed approach keeps all incisions inside the nostrils. The best approach possible depends on your nose's structure and which issues are being corrected, which we'll discuss during your consultation.

Can functional rhinoplasty help with snoring or sleep apnea?

Functional rhinoplasty may help some people breathe more freely through the nose, which could improve snoring when nasal obstruction is contributing to it. Sleep apnea is more complicated and often involves the airway beyond the nose, so functional rhinoplasty is not considered a stand-alone treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. If you're struggling with sleep apnea, our team at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat can investigate the cause and help you determine the best course of treatment possible.

Will I have scars after rhinoplasty?

Closed rhinoplasty uses incisions inside the nostrils, so there is no external incision. Open rhinoplasty requires a small incision on the strip of tissue between the nostrils, which typically heals into a subtle scar that becomes less noticeable over time. Our surgeons at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat will make every effort to hide visible scarring and explain where the incisions will be made before your surgery so you know what to expect.

Is functional rhinoplasty covered by insurance?

Insurance may cover functional rhinoplasty when it is considered medically necessary to correct a documented breathing problem. If you have any questions about your coverage or need help with documentation, our team is happy to assist.

Schedule a functional rhinoplasty consultation with Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat to learn what may be restricting your nasal airflow and whether reconstructive surgery is an appropriate solution. With offices in Neptune, Holmdel, and Manahawkin, NJ, our team can evaluate the structure of your nose, explain what could be improved, and help you understand what surgery and recovery would involve. Our goal is to help your airways function more efficiently so that comfortable breathing can become a more natural part of your day.
