What Is Allergy Testing?
We all know the common signs of allergies — congestion, sneezing, drainage, itchy or watery eyes, and more. Our allergy physicians and skilled nurses provide lasting relief without the guesswork. Don't just live with allergies — schedule a consultation with our independent ear, nose, and throat doctors in Ocean or Monmouth Counties, NJ to get the quality care you deserve close to home.
How Does Allergy Testing and Immunotherapy Work?
Before doing anything, we'll start with a thorough discussion about your symptoms, any patterns you've noticed, and possible triggers that are causing allergies or making them worse. From there, we'll work on identifying specific triggers with environmental allergy testing, which may include introducing selected allergens to your skin to monitor your body's response or taking a small blood sample to check for evidence of an allergic reaction. We'll let you know before your test what we're looking for and what you can expect.
Once your allergy testing is complete, we'll review the findings with you and develop a long-term treatment plan to limit exposure and manage symptoms. Depending on your needs, we might recommend saline rinses, nasal steroid sprays, or antihistamines. Some patients can also benefit from immunotherapy, which we offer at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat in the form of allergy shots (SCIT— subcutaneous immunotherapy) or oral drops (SLIT— sublingual immunotherapy) to gradually reduce your sensitivity to known allergens. At each step of your treatment, we'll track your progress and adjust your plan to help you move toward long-term allergy relief.

Allergy Testing Reviews
I cannot speak highly enough of Dr. Husain, he is one of the best doctors I have ever had. He is extremely personable, knowledgeable, and truly listens to his patients' concerns and takes them very seriously. I have been seeing him for allergy treatment and also underwent a comprehensive sinus surgery with him recently. He made the entire process as comfortable as possible for me and did an excellent job. I would recommend Dr. Husain and his team to absolutely everyone.
I saw Dr. Husain in regards to my sinusitis issues and my allergy treatments. He was great at explaining my situation and recommended what he felt was the best options to improve my overall health. The overall experience went smoothly from initial check-in with Divana, being escorted to the examination room and initial checkup with Jen, to my consultation with Dr. Husain. I would recommend Dr. Husain to anyone I know with a sinus problem.
I am beyond impressed by this office. I was referred to an ENT after having constant pressure in my head and a bunch of other symptoms. From what I thought was just stubborn allergies, the real issue was brought to light and recently worked on. This whole experience made me wonder why I didn't go here sooner. Dr. Husain has wonderful listening skills and truly seemed to care about my concerns. This really helped because I've been burned by doctors in the past so he really eased my anxiety with this. Everyone in the office was really nice and welcoming. Also, shout out to Irene for being so awesome and patient with my million questions when preparing for my surgery. Overall, I am happy with my experience.
Dr. Husain is hands down the most amazing doctor there is! I had sinus issues my entire life but was always told it was seasonal allergies. Until one day those “seasonal allergies” never went away & my entire sinus system shut down. I found Dr. Husain and he immediately made me feel better after just the first visit. We took the steps towards prepping for surgery & I was more than excited. I’ve never had any surgeries before, but Dr. Husain made me feel safe and comfortable from the first visit, surgery time, and after. He is very personable, remembers everything you tell him, and never makes you feel rushed or uncomfortable in any way. He is very clear when explaining everything and even shows you what he’s looking at on the screen. Any complex questions you have, he gives simple answers. On surgery day, he had great bedside manners and made sure I was comfortable for my first time. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM FOR ANY/ALL ENT NEEDS. I’ve never met any kind of doctor that actually cared about his patients the way Dr. Husain does!

Frequently Asked Questions about Allergy Testing and Immunotherapy
What causes allergies?
Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to a substance that is normally harmless as though it poses a threat. Environmental triggers can include tree, grass, and weed pollens, mold, dust mites, and animal dander. The substances that cause symptoms vary from person to person, which is why allergy testing is the first part of an effective treatment plan.
How do allergy shots work?
Allergy shots expose the immune system to controlled amounts of allergens identified through testing. The dose is gradually increased over time with the goal of making the immune system less sensitive to those triggers. A full course of treatment may take several years, but most patients start to notice improvements in their allergy symptoms within the first few months.
How do you tell the difference between a cold and allergies?
Colds and environmental allergies can cause some of the same symptoms, including congestion, a runny nose, and sneezing. Allergies are more likely to cause itching or watery eyes and may follow a seasonal pattern or occur after exposure to a particular environmental trigger. A cold is caused by a virus and may be accompanied by symptoms such as body aches or fever. If you've noticed that your symptoms persist or recur frequently, our providers at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat can help identify the cause.
How long does allergy testing take?
The exact length of an appointment depends on the type and extent of testing being performed. During skin testing, placing the allergens generally takes about 5 – 10 minutes, followed by a waiting period of approximately 15 minutes while the skin is observed for reactions. Afterward, we'll evaluate your body's response and discuss the next steps with you.
Can allergies go away on their own?
It is possible for allergies to become less disruptive over time, but that does not mean they will disappear. You may also notice that your symptoms are worse during certain seasons or in certain environments and barely noticeable at other times. If allergies keep coming back or are getting in the way of feeling your best, testing can help identify your triggers and give you more options for finding lasting relief.
