Septoplasty in Neptune, Holmdel, and Manahawkin, NJ

The septum is the wall of cartilage that separates the inside of your nose into the left and right passages. Although a perfectly centered septum is uncommon, a significantly deviated septum can make it harder for air to pass through one side of the nose, causing congestion, snoring, difficulty breathing, nosebleeds, and other sinus problems. Septoplasty is a surgery performed at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat to straighten a deviated septum and create more room for the nose to function properly. If you experience frequent sinus infections, snoring or noisy breathing at night, or trouble breathing through the nose, schedule a consultation and exam with our ear, nose, and throat specialists in Neptune, Holmdel, or Manahawkin, NJ to learn if septoplasty can help.

Septoplasty at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat is performed in-office using general anesthesia and usually takes 1 – 2 hours. During your procedure, your surgeon will make a small incision inside your nose and gently lift the tissue covering the septum to access the underlying cartilage and bone, which will be straightened, reshaped, or removed to create a clearer passage for you to breathe. If there are other obstructions that are limiting airflow (such as nasal polyps or enlarged turbinates), those may also be addressed during your surgery. Once the septum is properly aligned, the tissues will be placed back into position, and the incisions will be closed. In some cases, splints or nasal packing may be placed inside the nose to support the septum and control bleeding while you recover. Because the incisions are made inside the nostrils, most patients see little to no visible scarring after septoplasty.

A deviated septum can occur naturally as your nose develops, or it could happen as a result of injury. Whatever the cause, the effects of a deviated septum can be hugely disruptive to your day-to-day life. Septoplasty at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat offers a direct way to correct the problem, providing benefits for patients across Neptune, Holmdel, and Manahawkin, NJ that include:

  • Improving airflow through the nose for easier breathing
  • Reducing chronic nasal congestion and blockage
  • Promoting better sleep quality by supporting clearer nighttime breathing
  • Lowering the frequency of sinus infections
  • Making exercise and physical activity more comfortable
  • Reducing frequent nosebleeds caused by a deviated septum

I’ve had chronic sinus congestion for some time now. In recent years, it had been getting worse and about three years ago I decided to seek medical intervention. I could function during the day but could barely pass air through my nose at night. 4-5 hours of sleep was about all I could muster and that was taking its toll.I found a large ENT practice with an office in Shrewsbury and started there. More than two years and multiple visits later, including a $10k turbinate reduction surgery at Monmouth Medical, zero relief. It was as if I had never set foot in their office. I was angry that so much time and my insurance company’s money was wasted on ineffective treatments.I stumbled on Coastal ENT and started over with Dr Shargorodsky. He got right to the point with a CT scan to find out WHY I could breathe through my nose. Imagine that. The practice in Shrewsbury never even suggested such an investigatory step.I had septoplasty surgery a few weeks ago and while I’m still healing, I’m already experiencing dramatic improvements. I can breathe so much easier now and I’m actually getting eight hours of sleep every night! Anyone who has experienced chronic sleep deprivation can tell you that’s huge.My positive experience doesn’t stop with Dr Shargorodsky. Every member of the Coastal ENT staff was excellent, from the front desk people to the surgical coordinator, to the surgical team, they all impressed me as competent and professional every step of the way. That’s rare in my experience. If you have the need for an ENT provider, I strongly recommend Coastal ENT. My only regret is not finding them sooner.

Dr. Goldfarb is truly an amazing surgeon! I had a septoplasty and rhinoplasty and I was super scared going into the surgery but he truly made the process so smooth and easy! His office is wonderful and you really feel safe going in. Throughout the entire process he makes sure that you feel comfortable and that you know exactly what’s waiting for you! I had a very distinctive shape to my nose which I was very insecure about as well as some major problems breathing; after the surgery even though I am only a week post-op, I can breathe so much easier and comfortably! Even though the swelling still has time to go down me and my family are absolutely amazed at the results! If you want a rhinoplasty or any cosmetic procedure, I highly HIGHLY recommend going here! Thank you so much Dr. Goldfarb; I look forward to my recovery!

I can’t speak highly enough about Dr. Jared Goldfarb and his entire team. Over the past few months, I went back and forth on whether I wanted to proceed with a full septo-rhinoplasty or just stick with a functional septoplasty. Throughout this entire process, Dr. Goldfarb was incredibly patient, supportive, and understanding. He never rushed me or pressured me into a decision, and always took the time to answer my questions thoroughly—no matter how many times I changed my mind.I’m now on day 2–3 post-op from my septo-rhinoplasty, and everything went smoothly. Recovery so far has been surprisingly manageable, and I’m feeling really optimistic. I’m so thankful for Dr. Goldfarb’s expertise, calm demeanor, and outstanding bedside manner. His entire team has been amazing, and I’m truly grateful for all the support I’ve received. Highly recommend!

What causes a deviated septum?

Some people are born with a septum that develops off-center as the nose grows. In other cases, an injury pushes the septum out of position. If you're having trouble breathing or experiencing regular sinus problems and have noticed that your septum looks off-center, you may be a candidate for septoplasty.

How can you tell if you have a deviated septum?

You may notice that it is consistently harder to breathe through one side of your nose, or you might feel congested even when you are not sick. Frequent nosebleeds, noisy breathing at night, and recurring sinus problems can also occur. Because other nasal conditions can feel very similar, one of the best ways to know whether your septum is contributing to the problem is by scheduling an exam with our providers at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat.

What’s the difference between septoplasty and rhinoplasty?

Septoplasty corrects the wall inside your nose that separates the two nasal passages, with the goal of improving airflow. Rhinoplasty reshapes the broader framework of the nose. Functional rhinoplasty may be performed to improve breathing when obstruction involves structures beyond the septum, while cosmetic rhinoplasty is performed to change the appearance of the nose.

Can septoplasty be combined with rhinoplasty?

If both the septum and the supporting structures of the nose are contributing to breathing problems, septoplasty and functional rhinoplasty can sometimes be performed during the same surgery. Rhinoplasty can also be combined with septoplasty when someone wants to address cosmetic concerns at the same time. Our team can determine which approach makes sense based on your breathing, nasal structure, and goals.

Is septoplasty covered by insurance?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for septoplasty when it is medically necessary to improve a documented breathing problem or address another covered condition. If you have any questions or concerns about insurance coverage or the cost of your treatment, we invite you to reach out to our team for assistance and to learn more about medical financing resources.

Nearly 80% of people live with a septum that is at least a little bit off-center. While most may never notice it, for those with a severe septal deviation, this condition can be hard to ignore. If you're having difficulty breathing through your nose or noticing that you have frequent sinus infections or other problems, reach out to Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat in Neptune, Holmdel, or Manahawkin, NJ to learn if you're a candidate for septoplasty. From septal deviation to nasal obstructions, we specialize in advanced treatments to help patients breathe more easily.
