"I read through quite a few of the reviews before booking an appointment with Dr McAfee, yet I was surprised by my visit two weeks ago. From most of the reviews I expected to be seen by the type of physician who takes time to carefully listen, ask lots of questions about the patients history and symptoms, and explain the issues or/and the anatomy involved as well as how the treatment should resolve the issues.Most highly rated physicians I’ve gone to over the years in fields ranging from dermatology to podiatry are generally patient focused and exude care and concern for the individual.If you are looking for the above this may not be the doctor that is the right fit for you. Dr McAffee does seem to be competent, courteous, and professional and I have no doubt that he is an excellent surgeon, and based on the reviews I would be very comfortable having him as a surgeon, if not for the consult and follow up. My visit however , was for a diagnosis and medication, not surgery.Here are my observations:The office staff was pleasant to deal with and the appointment was pretty prompt.An assistant entered the exam room and took a few minutes to ask for details, and enter a basic history and description of the symptoms into the patient record.However, when Dr Mcafee entered the room, he very quickly asked what brought me in, and let me get only several words in before taking a super fast look, stating after a few seconds that he didn’t see any issue, and recommending an over the counter product. He then asked me rather tersely if there were any further questions. I started to tell him that the issue was ongoing for a couple of months on and off, and wanted to give a more detailed description of the issue, but he didn’t really give me the time, and reiterated to take the OTC product.When I asked what some other steps might be if the problem persists he said take the product and I can reach out then for other steps if it doesn’t work, walking out the door to his next appointment.The whole interaction was approximately 3 to maybe 4 minutes. I have no doubt that he is competent and intend to try his recommendation, but can’t shake the feeling that my primary care physician who suggested checking the issue out by an ENT was far more focused and attentive than the ENT, and actually had a more targeted range of options to suggest.If you want a competent experienced ENT who will give a 20 second look at the issue, give you a quick instruction, and send you on your way, this is your doctor. If you need a proficient surgeon, based on the reviews he certainly seems to be one.However, If you are looking for someone who will spend the time (and I’m not talking 15 minutes, just literally the extra couple minutes to make the patient feel comfortable) to listen to the issue, ask a few questions, and take a couple of minutes to explain the issue and diagnosis and perhaps the physiology involved, rather than running out to the next patient, this is not going to be a doctor you are comfortable with.For context I am a relatively young patient who is decently familiar with medical terminology and anatomy, and I’m able to research and familiarize myself with a medical issue including reading basic medical literature and abstracts, and have the ability to ask relevant, on target questions.I rarely make medical appointments but when I do I find most physicians pleasant, caring, likeable, and easy to converse with about the medical condition at hand. In this case I don’t think Dr McAfee was a good fit for me, though I’m sure he would be a good choice for others with different expectations."
"God Bless Dr. McAfee!!!I had been struggling with hearing loss for years, and all the other Doctors told me, my only option was hearing aids.I asked Dr. McAfee if he would take a chance and try to repair my hearing, and he was the only Doctor that would agree to even try. He told me that it would require 3 separate operations but he couldn't garentee anything. I was just delighted that he was willing to try and restore my hearing. No one else would even make the attempt.After the first operation he told me that he had so much success with the first operation that he believed he would only need one more surgery. Sure enough after the second surgery my hearing had been completely restored. I had not been able to hear on my own without the assistance of hearing aids for years.Now I don't wear any hearing aids and I am eternally grateful to Dr.McAfee for restoring my hearing.I can not say enough about the level of skill that he demonstrated in restoring my hearing. Thank you Sooooo much Dr. McAfee for not only restoring my hearing, but for being willing to take the chance on me.James Walsh"

"Nice large waiting room very efficient check in service Pleasant Staff honest doctors. I had wax cleaned from my ears nine months ago. I made an appointment to do the same thing. Dr told me wax is good for your ears. There’s no need to come back for a cleaning."
"Dr. McAfee was excellent with my son. Not going to lie, he is quick- in and out. But he’s extremely efficient and knowledgeable. He knew immediately my son needed tubes. They fit him in the following week. The procedure latest five minutes. My son was home and happy an hour later. Within two months, his infections greatly decreased and his hearing test was now normal. He had pretty bad hearing loss before them. I went in knowing exactly what he needed. Dr. McAfee confirmed and delivered great results."

"I was seen by Dr. McAfee for a follow-up visit after he put in a drain in my right ear to drain the fluid that had accumulated and so future fluid would not accumulate, so I can hear again in that ear. Because up until he put the drain in my ear I could not hear in that ear cause I was in & out of hospitals and nursing home subacute rehabs for 5-6 months to treat my stage 4 lung cancer and could not get to a ENT Doctor. "I first came to Coastal ENT and was seen by Dr. McAfee, and he was wonderful, confident, and I knew it was in good hands. His staff, Kyle and Bri and Meghan all wonderful. Kyle was a godsend, very thorough and call back waz top notch. Bri was a comfort right before the Dr wanted to do a camera scope to see my thyroid and laryngeal area etc. Her demeanor was a familiar vibe to me, so Dr. McAfee had me scheduled CT scan. "This was my daughters 1st visit with Dr McAfee..and he's great! I appreciated the level of concern he had for my daughter's hearing loss. I felt like he was on the same page as we were, and never felt rushed. Sometimes (generally speaking) a lot of doctors do not seem to show as much concern when they know the patient only has state medicaid insurance. Definitely not the case here. We're very happy."
"My experience with Dr. Seth McAfee was excellent. I've had two exostoses surgeries under his care. He's highly intelligent with a unique and super focused skill set. Highly regarded from his peers -- that was important to me while I was doing my research on who I was going to trust with this procedure.I had minimal post-op pain and discomfort, which is a testament to his attention to detail, patience and commitment to his craft. From my gathering, he is the most experienced set of hands on the east coast for this delicate and arduous procedure. He and his team are very efficient and wonderful - at no point in time did they make me feel anything but confident and comfortable.We're lucky to have him here on the East Coast."

Dr. McAfee experted confirmed root cause and resolved it through skillful suctioning that can only be done by a professional. I learned 2 things: 1. I had inadvertently bruised/injured the non blocked ear canal/drum in my persistent efforts to remove wax on that side. 2. There is no OTC device or solution that can safely remove ALL wax without causing damage."

"It was 3 yrs ago. Dr Seth Mc Afee observed me for 3 weeks with medication/scoping, then 1 month later (insurance) took a biopsy which led to a diagnoses of very early stage Laryngeal Cancer. "In an environment where the patients are diagnosed hearing impaired or being tested for it, taking away the ability to "lip reading" because of mask wearing and on top of it, the plexiglass barrier minimizing sound... I observed very patient and professional front end staff trying to assist new patients with the check-in procedures. Not sure if there's a way you may consider these barriers to minimize an already stressful situation for these folks 😔 My personal experience with my visit with Dr. McAfee and his assistant was prompt, professional honest and courteous. "Dr. McAfee is a fantastic doctor and truly an expert in his field.I was suffering from hearing loss and it was becoming more frustrating every day not being able to communicate with people. I was going to another ENT practice before going to see Dr. McAfee. The other ENT recommended hearing aids, which helped a little at first. After multiple visits and many adjustments I was at a point where this practice could no longer help.I met Dr. McAfee a few years ago and he along with Dr. Sean Houston had suggested that I might have otosclerosis, which was causing my hearing loss. Dr. McAfee had suggested I have a stapedectomy procedure to help with the hearing loss. "Amazing experience. I was able to get a SATURDAY appointment at 8:15am only a week prior to! When I called, I had assumed I would have to wait months to be seen. They’re availability is insane. I was in and out before my appointment even started which is so convenient. Normally I wait months for appointments and I’m there 2-3 hours just waiting. I think wait times and appointment availability are what truly make or break a practice no matter how good a doctor may be and this practice just blows everyone else of out the park.
